EchoStreams Offers a Sneak Peek into Next-Gen NVMe Solutions for its Flash Storage Servers (FlacheStreams) and High Availability Redundant Servers (DuraStreams) at Supercomputing 2018

DALLAS, TEXAS — Supercomputing 2018 (SC18) - November 12, 2018 - EchoStreams, an original design manufacturer (ODM) specializing in purpose-built high performance server and storage solutions, today announced at SC18 four new all-flash storage platforms that provide higher density, capacity, and top-tier performance benefits from NVM Express technology.

“For multiple years at this tradeshow, EchoStreams has been a major partner in highlighting key foundational solutions in innovative storage and advanced computing,” Chief Technology Officer, Gene Lee said. “Especially for historical exhibits like SCinet, that showcase world-class compute and storage connected to a network that can deliver roughly 3~4 Tbps; it is a great opportunity for us to participate with other thought leaders in addressing next-gen data challenges with our solutions.”

As the demand for digital data continues to grow exponentially, so does the expectation for storage architectures to deliver performance and reliability. These new data storage solutions are available from EchoStreams’ comprehensive portfolio of flash storage servers (FlacheStreams) and its high availability dual-node redundant servers (DuraStreams). EchoStreams’ storage solutions address the challenges and workload demands from Cloud/Datacenter, Video,HPC and Telecommunication market verticals today.

The following solution demos below will be on display for the rest of the SC18 conference from Monday, Nov 12, 2018 through Thursday, November 15, 2018 in EchoStreams’ booth #745 in the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas:

Next-Gen NVMe Flash Storage Server Solutions:
  1. FlacheSAN1N36M-UN - 1U 36 Bay NVMe M.2 & NF1 Single Socket EPYC Processor Server
  2. FlacheSAN1N20U-UN - 1U 20 BAYS NVMe U.2 7MM SINGLE EPYC 500W HRP
  3. FlacheSAN1N10U-UN - 1U 10 BAYS NVMe U.2 PCIE X4 SINGLE EPYC 500W HRP
Next- Gen NVMe High Availability Redundant Server Solutions:
  1. DSS224N-UN - 2U 24 Bay NVMe EPYC Dual-Node Redundant Server
EchoStreams once again takes an innovative approach to engineering its storage hardware by maximizing the performance, throughput, and Input/output per Second (IOPS). At the core of these designs is the latest processor technology from AMD EPYC as well as the performance benefits from NVM Express technology through the PCIe 3.0 protocol.

These new storage solutions leverage key benefits from NVM Express, also known as NVMe, which is an interface specification optimized for NAND flash and next-generation solid state storage technologies.

Compared with other interfaces designed for mechanical storage devices, NVMe reduces latency, and delivers higher Input/Output per Second (IOPS) providing top-tier performance for accessing data from the storage. NVMe also offers performance benefits across multiple cores for quick access to critical data, scalability for current and future performance, and support for standard security protocols.

“The value proposition for NVMe technology is enormous when it comes to delivering storage solutions requiring high performance, low latency, and minimal bottlenecks,” EchoStreams Product Manager, Andy Lee said. “Especially as the cost/GB for NAND storage decreases, enterprise customers with highly demanding and compute intensive workloads can utilize NVMe at massive scale to meet incredible performance demands.”

The newest designs from the FlacheStreams line comes in 1U rack mountable form factors ranging from 10, 20, and 36 hot-swappable tooless drive bays. The 10/20 bay designs can support 15mm and 7mm z-height solid state hard drives respectively; but the 36 bay design is in an innovative class of its own, it can support next generation storage drives in both m.2 and NF1 (m.3) form factors. The NF1 form factor was specifically designed to maximize performance and capacity for data intensive/low latency workloads. The CPU powering these 1U storage designs is built on the I/O-rich AMD EYPC processor based on the “Zen” architecture that natively gives access to 128 PCIe 3.0 lanes from only a single-socket processor. The abundance of PCIe 3.0 lanes in single-socket design provides direct access to performance based storage drives, pushing read / write operations to an impressive ~400 to ~500 Gb/s. The 1U designs (10, 20, 36) also support 2x full-height PCIe 3.0 x 16 and 1x OCP PCIe 3.0 x16 reserved for high performance network cards that offer high bandwidth and the lowest latency for external client applications.

Another innovative design that will be on display at SC18 is the DuraStreams line of mission critical redundant servers that provides 24/7 runtime. The DuraSteams line will offer an industry leading dual-node, 2U 24 Bay, NVMe EPYC powered solution that provides PCIe 3.0 transfer speeds dedicated for performance based data redundancy. The dual-node design and support of both dual-port NVMe/SAS storage drives allows for multiple data paths and superior back-up redundancy for critical storage workloads. The newest 2U 24 Bay NVMe solution in the DuraStreams line takes performance and speed into consideration by supporting a complete NVMe topology. Some of the key HA performance features that will be offered are support for dual-port NVMe (x4) storage drives, a PCIe 3.0 x16 non-transparent bridge for registers/messages, and a GigE heartbeat signal for monitoring of the primary and secondary nodes.

Another distinct feature worth mentioning but optional is support for two sets of 8-Cell battery backup units (BBU). These additional BBUs provide an even greater level of HA redundancy and power-loss protection. This unique feature allows the perfect amount of time for data in cache to be transferred to protected non-volatile storage drives. In the high availability and redundant server arena, the DuraStreams line also features a unique hot swappable dual-node motherboard design (E-ATX) that provides easy access and maintenance if component failures arise. This feature allows for service technicians to quickly swap hardware failures in matter of seconds, further reducing and eliminating time-sensitive downtime. The DuraStreams line is a flagship platform from EchoStreams that delivers HA redundancy for specific storage applications requiring reliability and zero downtime.

Unlike many other storage ODM's, EchoStreams ensures its storage solutions provide a true balance of price/performance and efficiency. Current customers of EchoStreams now have even more choices for flash storage server solutions that deliver high performance, IOPS, and throughput. In addition, customers that rely on mission-critical redundancy and high availability for their data can now rely on the speed and performance benefits performance from NVMe technology.

These new designs will not be officially launched until early 2019 but the showcase at the tradeshow offers attendees a sneak peek into EchoStreams next generation storage architecture and solutions.
